We provide free specialist information skills training for all UHBW staff and students. Our one-to-one or small groups training provides hands on experience in information searching and critical appraisal. We also provide regular drop-in clinics, or alternatively you can just stop us in the library or on the ward for a more informal chat. Please contact Library@uhbw.nhs.uk to find out the latest drop-in clinic dates or to arrange a session for yourself or a group of colleagues.

This page covers:

  • General Training
  • Nursing Specific Training Offers

Training: General

We run three main training sessions and then two introductory sessions on Study Skills and Library Resources, each of which last an hour (though timing can be tailored to your needs):

  • Literature Searching and systematic review support: An in-depth guide on how to search like an expert. Useful for anybody who wants to find the best and quickest way to source articles and find relevant evidence. You may also want to try this searching e-learning course from HEE.
  • Critical Appraisal: How to assess the strengths and weaknesses of published articles. We look at different research designs, bias and validity, and frameworks that can be used to support critical appraisal.
  • Medical Statistics: A basic introduction to the key statistics in medical articles. The session gives an overview of statistics that compare risk, statistics that test confidence, and forest plots. Additional content focuses on statistics that analyse clinical investigations and test difference.
  • Study Skills: A training session aimed at discussing and understanding the skills required to enhance your study, whilst also familiarising you with the library and the support and services it can provide.
  • Library resources: learn about the resources the Library has on offer, and learn how to make the best use of them.

We can also give a General Library Introduction, which covers how to access the Library and its resources, an overview of our print and electronic resources, and the services and training we offer.

If you would like to book on to a particular session or arrange for a one-to-one session with a librarian, please email library@uhbw.nhs.uk.

Nursing Specific Training

We also offer training specific to nursing. Training that is particularly popular includes:
