Basic IT Skills

Using a computer can make your life easier and open up many new
opportunities for you.

In this free course, you will learn about the basic functions of a computer
and how to use one safely. You will learn how to turn a computer on and off, 
and how to change the settings so that it suits your needs. The course will also teach you about the different parts of a computer.

The keys on the keyboard control what happens on the computer screen and lets you type letters and numbers. Being able to use a keyboard is one of the most important skills for using computers and the internet.

In this course you will learn how to use a computer keyboard to type text and numbers. The course will also show you how to use a keyboard to find your way around your computer and perform other simple tasks.

The mouse controls what happens on your computer screen. It lets you click on things on the screen
and scroll up and down. Using a mouse is one of the most important things you need
to be able to do to use computers and the internet.

In this course you will learn how to use and click a computer mouse. It will also teach you how to
hold a mouse and how to use it to get around your computer.

More and more phones and computers are being made with a screen that you can touch. This makes understanding how to use a touchscreen very important. Using a touchscreen on your mobile phone,
smartphone or tablet computer is often easier than using a keyboard and mouse.

In this course you will learn about how to use a touchscreen on a mobile phone or tablet computer.
The course will cover basic and more advanced touchscreen controls. You will also find out about getting the most out of your touchscreen smartphone or tablet.

How to Print, Scan, and Copy

If you need help with printing, scanning, or copying documents, please ask at the library desk or check out the posters on the wall next to the printer.

A guide to printing, copying, and scanning in the library will be uploaded to this space once our printing system has been updated.

The Copyright Licensing Agency has an agreement with the Department of Health on a single licence that covers all NHS staff in England.

Kallidus is a a modern learning platform designed to support simple, fast and effective learning. This is the system the trust uses to support access to essential and other training; it supports access to face-to-face and virtual sessions as well as eLearning modules.

How to use MS Teams and Outlook

Microsoft 365 is a product family of productivity software,
collaboration and cloud-based services owned by Microsoft. 

To help you get to grips with 365, check out a range of training opportunities collected by the Trust here or you can visit Microsoft's
help and training for 365 here.

Microsoft Teams is a collaboration platform where you can message, share information and hold online video calling with your colleagues within the trust.

Outlook allows you to send and receive email messages, manage your calendar, store names and numbers of your contacts, and track your tasks.

How to use Microsoft Applications

Microsoft Word is a word processing program that allows for the creation of both simple and complex documents.

Excel is a software program created by Microsoft that uses spreadsheets to organize numbers and data with formulas and functions.

PowerPoint  is a presentation-based program that uses graphics, videos, etc. to make a presentation more interactive and interesting.

The internet is a giant library of information. Knowing how to access this information can make a your life a lot easier. For example, you can use the internet to keep in touch with friends and family, read the news, follow your hobbies, watch your favourite TV programmes, shop, compare prices and pay bills.

In this course you will learn all about browsing the internet. The course covers using a web browser to view websites, creating bookmarks and what copyright means online.

What is Digital Literacy?

Digital literacy has been defined by NHS England as “those capabilities that fit someone for living, learning, working, participating and thriving in a digital society". These capabilities are wide ranging and can mean skills ranging from basic computer competence to keeping up to date by evaluating and adopting new technology and developing new skills as necessary.

As technology evolves rapidly, we want to support the health and social care workforce to be fully competent, confident and capable in its use in the workplace.

Both Libraries at UHBW have a range of IT facilities, including:

  • Trust PCs
  • Trust Laptops
  • Free NHS WiFi
  • Study Spaces with power sockets so you can bring your own device        
  • Printing, scanning, and copying facilities 
  • IT equipment for loan, including headsets and webcams

What is Digital Literacy?

NHS England's Health and Care Digital Capabilities Framework

The Health and Care Digital Capabilities Framework has been developed to support the improvement of the digital capabilities of everyone working in health and care. It is intended as a developmental and supportive tool that can empower and enable all staff. It is intended that anyone accessing the framework can be provided with guidance towards extending their digital capabilities to be able to provide better care in our complex, ever-changing digital world.
